SHORT-TERM VARIATIONS IN CAVE CARBON DIOXIDE AND RADON CONCENTRATIONS
30 minute Lecture|Prof JOHN GUNN
Abstract
Spot measurements of carbon dioxide and radon concentrations in caves have shown that they may sometimes pose a risk to caver health. However, until recently there have been few studies of short-term variability, primarily because of a lack of suitable instruments. In this talk I will present results from two relatively affordable instruments that show substantial short-term variability.Carbon dioxide is rarely a problem in caves that are widely used for instructed caving but instructors are required by law to control their radiation dose and the new instrument provides an opportunity to do this much more reliably than has previously been the case.
