Hidden Earth 2017
Discovery & Rediscovery; Recent Exploration of the Caves & Mines of Sandford Hill
45 minute Lecture|Mr Ed Waters
Abstract
Over the past three years members of the MCG have been working hard to explore the 18th Century lead mines and natural caves associated with the vein seen at the First Crossroads in Sandford Levvy. This has led to significant extensions to Sandford Levvy, and the re-opening of Pearl Mine which was blocked in 1970. In addition nearly 250m of passage previously un-entered by cavers has been added to Pearl Mine, and the prospect of a new Mendip through trip is tantalisingly close.
The attached photo is of the author on a traverse in Pearl Mine. The photos was taken by Andy Horeckyj
