Duolingo for UK Cavers – Ogofau by any other name are just as deep…
45 minute Lecture|Dickon Meurig And Elaine Oliver
Abstract
As a nation with six or seven indigenous languages the United Kingdom has a great deal of linguistic heritage preserved in its place names. Very often these place names simply describe the surrounding landscape but they can also offer historical context or topographical insight. As cavers we are intimately involved with the landscape and therefore an understanding of the meaning and origin of place names can greatly enrich our experience. So sit back and listen as an Irishwoman and a Welshman provide a brief introduction to this fascinating topic.
